India: un popolo sommerso (in print)

 >  The article “The submerged people” reveals that during the last fifty years the Indian government has been implementing a massive plan to build over 3,000 dams on the Narmada rivers. The project, financed by powerful international investitors, is crucial to generate the electricity that is required to  further the development of the emerging steel and hi-tech sectors. This kind of economic progress will likly enrich a few people while it  will be paid by many: Hundreds of thousands of farmers have already’ had to flee the flooded,valley  abandoning their homes, crop fields and temples. This is a story of  development where human misery and  environmental devastation are entangled with the needs of business.

Da oltre mezzo secolo il governo indiano sta attuando un piano colossale per la costruzione di oltre 3000 dighe lungo il fume Narmada, Le opere, cofinanziate da potenti investitors internazionali, serviranno a produrre l’enegia elettrica necessaria allo sviluppo dell’emergente settore siderurgico e hi-tech. Un progresso che arrichira’ pochi e sara’ pagato dai piu’: centinaia di migliaia di contadini sono gia’ dovuti fuggire dalle valli allagate, abbandonando case, raccolti, templi.
